It might be old school in graphics but it's also old school in its sensibilities, and is all the better for it.
I could waffle on for ages about how much I love this game but I don't want to make too much of a giant wall of text so I will just say it's an unpolished gem of a game and the only "Souls-Like" that actually gave me the same feeling I got when playing the Souls games. And if I need to backtrack to find some secrets, everything's dead, I can do it at my own pace. At first I thought "wtf, how do I level?" But after a while I recognized it's brilliance, because now I'm not sprinting past mobs like they're inconvenient, I'm killing everything. In your offhand you can carry shields or guns, guns work sort of like magic in dark souls, with an energy meter, but you don't refill your magic at a breach (this games equivalent of a bonfire), you must leach it from enemies with your melee attacks! So aggression is rewarded with ammo which can buy you space to heal or simply finish off your enemies when you're low on health.Įnemies don't respawn at a breach. But then each weapon also has its own form of levelling, and after enough experience it may reveal a special move exclusive to that weapon, to reward the time you do spend with it! What does this mean? Well it avoids that awful "I must stick to this weapon" syndrome, because you can move the chips around so it is never a waste of time and you don't end up with one amazing weapon and a load of trash.

You can upgrade all your stats just as you'd expect in this sort of game, but then you can also upgrade chips that you slot into your weapons.
Other games say "Hey look, here's a little health upgrade we hid behind a breakable wall, are we Dark Souls yet?", Hellpoint says screw that, you dared to go off the beaten track so here's an entirely new area, a boss you could easily miss, multiple items, oh and this secret area has its own secret areas too! The game world is absolutely massive, labyrinthine and alien. BUT I'm here to tell you why I think you owe it to yourself to give it a shot.

Hint: it isn't just difficulty! If you played and loved the Dark Souls series then you may have searched for something else to scratch that itch, and if you landed on the store page for Hellpoint and thought "What in the PS3 looking cash grab is this?" And then bought something a little trendier like Mortal Shell, I get it, really I do.
